just the hospital that he goes doesn't do it yet, they expect they will be able to do them in a few years. He SHOULD be getting on the list this week, the hospital is making the dentist come over tomorrow and do the dental work so he can be put on it. And since his MELD score is so high, he will be at the top of the list. Hopefully he'll have a new liver by the time our birthday arrives on the 28th.

  8. Maeve added a post in a topic Would like some life advice/help right now (Update)

Hi Maeva. I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I went through this a little over 2 years ago. My dad had end stage kidney disease (on dialysis) after basically years of neglect regarding his diabetes and high blood pressure. Prior to going on dialysis, his health deteriorated to a point where he was in and out of the hospital all the time. He was having a hard time walking, he was falling all the time and Mom was struggling to care for him. And I live 3 states away. We went to Vanderbilt for a 2 day thing just to talk about getting on the kidney donor list.  I knew at any given time I could get "the call". It was a roller coaster ride until he died rather suddenly of something completed unrelated: A huge lung mass from years of smoking that collapsed his lung. (seriously folks, take care of your bodies)
It's tough. Auto pilot, distraction, all the things mentioned above. Seeking medical care if you need it. Friends, family. Vent your frustrations to someone when you need to. The thing is, you have to take care of yourself or you can not take care of anyone else. And do not feel ashamed or selfish if you have to take a day to escape.
As for the kids, while it may feel like a burden, it sounds like they ended up in the best place. Kids can have a way of making you feel like life goes on and they give you something for which to be strong. Even when you want to dissolve in that puddle of tears. Take the kids out someplace fun. Distraction for you and gives your mom a rest. Taking care of a chronically ill spouse or other loved one is hard, hard work. Emotionally and physically.
As to the living liver donation, is it a matter that he is not a candidate or just that the hospital does not do them? It may be worth seeing if there is a viable option for finding a hospital that does live liver donation if it is the latter. I don't know if this is a good list or not.  Living donor liver transplant hospitals
I don't play anymore either. But I still know most of the names in this thread. And how could I forget the almost twin me that everyone always confused. =) And for some reason, I'm in all italics now and can't seem to turn it off. Ain't I fancy?

On the matter of your anxiety be very specific on the wheres and hows of when you get panic attacks. I enjoy some of the wonderful world of anxiety and I use a very mild anti-anxiety medication that isn't a narcotic and that I can use before situations that I know will cause problems or just when I feel things "building up".  Don't EVER be ashamed to discuss it, you aren't weak or whatever else society likes to say - no one asks to deal with anxiety. It's not like I walked out one day and thought "you know what would be great? Going out in public and feeling like I cannot breathe!"
It sounds like you have a loving family and almost certainly they think you're doing all you can to help. They may not say it or show it but they are also probably feeling much the same way you are, it has to be overwhelming for everyone. Go easy on yourself, it sounds like your worst judge is inside your head.
    Many hugs!

I actually did make a gofundme roughly a month ago or so. I've almost raised 1k on there, which is pretty great. My dad's insurance is going to cover the majority of the cost of the transplant, thankfully, so the only issue of funds has to really do with their bills and food for the kids.
I JUST got insurance back 4 days ago, so I'm going to be calling places tomorrow to get appointments set up to help with my anxiety issues. Thank you

    Maeva,

I don't have any words of wisdom as far as how to cope, I wish I did. I went through something similar in the past with both my parents who were facing major health crises. Our system for liver transplants sux here in the US.  It is very hard to contemplate losing people so close to us. They are lucky to have you.   One thing though, you would be surprised at what people will give on a https://www.gofundme.com/ site. they have categories for medical emergencies and other emergencies. As we have seen in this gaming community alone people do come together to help in very dramatic ways.  So reaching out there may help to lessen at least the financial load. I know one friend whose father needed a modified handicap van and was able to get that done. Also depending on where you live, United Way and Aging and Disability Resource centers can be helpful as well.  And as others mentioned, take care of yourself. Meditation, believe it or not, (not religious necessarily but just mindful) can help to ease the pain and sadness. places like www.calm.com, www.omvana.com etc have free ones, as well as on youtube.com such as https://youtu.be/EaRu14P9H84

thank you for sharing what you are going through. being with people who appreciate you and can give you at least a virtual hug can help too.

Sending warm thoughts and hope. Phlo

    Hi Maeva,
Don't feel ridiculous at all for reaching out and saying something.  It's so important to get your feelings off your chest in times like this as bottling them up is even worse.  You're being very, VERY hard on yourself, which you don't deserve.  You ARE strong, to be shouldering this burden, helping support your sister's kids and your mom, and taking care of your dad.
I can't tell you what's best to do in such trying times, but I can tell you that you're already doing much of it without giving yourself credit for it.  You're THERE for your father and mother at an extremely difficult time for them (whereas I was mostly distant and remote from my dad for years prior to his death... and still beat myself up with guilt because of it), and you're working hard to find solutions to your dad's medical situation.  I know your support must mean everything to them.  It may not feel like you're doing enough, but that's only because illness, especially serious illness like what your dad is going through, is SO far beyond our ability to control.  It makes us feel helpless and useless in the face of it.  But you ARE making a difference, and I'm sure your mom and dad love you very much for it.
The most important thing is to remember to take care of YOURSELF, before your health and well-being suffers as a result of all the work you're doing for everyone else.  I can share some things I did to help pull myself out of some difficult times if it would be helpful.  Don't hesitate to inbox message me here if you'd like to talk more about this.
    Sending many hugs,
    ~Arabella/Lauren

I'm feeling your pain, Maeva. It never gets easy, as much as you get used to the sorrow you carry around...Your family sounds very strong and supportive, which is amazing! Gather what strength you can from them. No one can relieve the emotions you feel but by being there for Dad at his moment of need means so much to him. We have to appear strong to others, the children and the sensitive need the reassurance, but at the end of the day, sometimes (...often!) it can be overbearing. Reach out to your family, talk with friends, even distract yourself by doing things that relieve some tension (wvw is one way I completely escape the stress in life). In the meantime, you have to do what you can, even when you feel like giving up and doing nothing. You have to prepare for whatever comes next and you have to believe that you will one day see better days again. Life can be painfully cruel and watching your parents age/ suffer is something no one thinks about until it stares you in the face and demands your full attention. Meditation, breathing, even singing (humming) and prayer are all helpful during the darkest hours. Know that you are in my, and your families' prayers. Your father and your family are so lucky to have you during this crisis. Sometimes even TS can be a distraction, just listen to the TC banter can chase the pressure off...

When you go through crises like this a lot of the time you feel like you're on autopilot and it can feel like it's not quite real. You just live through it because you have no choice. When an opportunity presents you have to try and make the best of it, because that's all you can do and often that wont feel like much. Everybody takes a beating at some point in their lives, you just have to accept this as part of life and do you best keep moving forward.

Would like some life advice/help right now (Update)
I know this post is going to sound ridiculous either way I write it, but screw it.
The majority of you won't know me. I've barely been playing for a while, and pretty much stopped in the last month, WvW even longer.
So right before thanksgiving, maybe the week before, I took my dad to the hospital where they discovered he had pneumonia. Nothing too serious, but a few days after they sent him home he went back complaining of pain. That's when they discovered his liver is decompensating (pretty much failing). He's had cirrhosis of the liver for a good 4 years now, but this was sudden. Either he gets on the liver transplant list or he won't even live out to the end of 2017. I don't even think he'll live past this summer. He's gotten really bad. Completely disabled, can't drive, he can barely walk nowadays. Sunday he ended up falling while trying to get out of his chair and cracked a rib.
The worst part of this whole ordeal is that him and my mom have been raising 2 of my nephews and 1 niece since April. He JUST got a job after being unemployed for 10 months and then had to turn around and quit because he can no longer drive. My mom can't work because she has to raise these kids, so I've been trying to help with my part-time job to help with bills. My scumbag of a sister decides that her child-molester boyfriend is more important than her entire family. My mother and I are both trying to just keep them out of the loop, letting them know that grandpa is sick, but not telling them how sick, although I know they've probably guessed it, as most kids are pretty intuitive.
He's basically done everything to get on the list, he just needs a note from his fucking dentist, who won't sign the papers until he pulls some of my dad's teeth, which he can't even schedule in until the second week of February. The hospital cannot do a live donor transplant (I already tried asking because i was going to give him half my liver), so once we get this paper signed it'll be a massive waiting game.

This is the first time I've had to deal with coming close to losing a family member. I never even envisioned not having both of my parents before I turned 30. Of course I've lost family, but nobody this close ever.

I just want to ask anyone that's ever experienced it... how do you cope? How do you manage to do anything at all? I can barely function just thinking about him dying, even though there still is hope. I have to put up a front for the kids, so I'm always either ending up a colossal puddle of tears at night (like right now) or just majorly depressed while I'm at work. Nothing I do seems to work, not even the medication I've been taking.
I still get a lot of support from my family, telling me that I'm strong, but I don't feel like it. I feel like I'm not doing enough for anyone anymore.

Thanks for just reading this. I know I sound pathetic, but I can't keep it bottled up anymore.
